Everyday these two love to get their paws wet, and play catch in the water, either in the sea or in the river. They never get bored with it, and would probably play forever. The excitement they show makes it seem as though every stick or shell is the very first one they have ever tried to catch. It makes me think that dogs are very good at being mindful and living in the moment, and perhaps I could learn a thing or two from them.
Everyday they need to be walked, which means I get walked too, no matter the weather. Its easy in summer and gets harder as we head into winter, but everyday is different, even if we are doing the same walks. I think that’s one of the things I love most about living in Scotland, the weather is constantly changing, and constantly surprising us, and because of the dogs I have come to enjoy whatever it throws at us each day. Everyday there is a new surprise in store, and sometimes you can’t tell by looking out of the window, you actually have to step out into it to feel what its like before choosing a coat.
Sometimes these everyday things, like a familiar dog walk, are easy to do in auto pilot, but then more than half the pleasure and discovery is lost. It’s a great mindfulness exercise for me everyday to wake up to whats going on around me on my familiar walks with the dogs. To wake up into my senses and really see with curiosity what’s in front of me each and every step. To be truly alive and inhabiting my life, instead of being caught up in troublesome thoughts about the past or the future.
Everyday life is surprising enough to fill me with wonder, when I remember to pay attention and notice it 🙂
